Alabama bill would ban the use of pronouns and discussions of gender identity in the classroom

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAFF) – Lawmakers pre-filed a bill that would keep any discussion of gender identity out of the classroom.

The bill would also prohibit teachers and other staff members from calling students by pronouns inconsistent with that student’s biological sex.

It would also keep employees from displaying LGBTQ flags in the classroom.

State Representative Mack Butler, who filed the bill, said these topics have no place in the classroom.

Butler said that he wants to keep discussions about gender identity out of the school curriculum.

However, he said that students would still be able to talk to a teacher or counselor privately about gender identity under his bill.

“This just keeps it out of the classroom,” said Butler. ”If a student needs to talk to the teacher or counselor, they absolutely can do this. This is focused on the school itself to keep the curriculum clean.”

Butler said he has been sent examples of assignments that teachers have given students that were not appropriate to teach in the classroom.

He said that schools need to be more focused on academics and less on discussing gender identities.

“We have not been doing the best job that we can do on that,” said Butler. ”If we can get everybody back focused on the academics, then I think we’ll have a much better environment. Just leave the sexualization of our children alone.”

Alyx Kim-Yohn with the Alabama Transgender Rights Action Coalition said they believe trans children are being targeted in the bill.

“It’s heartbreaking to see,” said Kim-Yohn. “Teenagers are already under so much pressure to perform in schools and make the right decisions about their colleges and the rest of their lives before they’re even old enough to vote. And also cannot be their true, authentic selves, or even have the freedom to explore if their true, authentic selves, which could be trans or gender nonconforming.“

They said the bill also has a lot of inconsistencies.

“This bill is meant to discriminate against LGBTQ people,” said Kim-Yohn. ”The way it’s written suggests that there can be no discussion of any sexual identity orientation, which includes people who are not trans. The first woman on the moon. The first woman to do anything is a suddenly gendered concept.”

In the last legislative session, Butler sponsored a similar bill, which did not make it through the Senate.

If this bill passes in the 2026 legislative session, it would become effective on July 1, 2026.
